Digital Photography

If you have ever asked the salesman in the local camera shop what is digital photography you probably got some long winded answer that involved pixels, shutter speeds, white light and many other words and phases that you simply didn't understand. You probably walked out of the store knowing no more than you did when you entered.

You are probably wondering if you need to take a digital photography for beginners course just to get your question answered. While there are many reasons why taking a digital photography course for beginners may be prudent, you shouldn't have to take a course just to get a simple question answered in simple language. While the explanation found in this article may be a little too simplified it will none the less give you at least a basic understanding of what is digital photography and what the benefits of it are.

The computer

In order to best understand what is digital photography you need to understand a little bit about how a computer itself works. Without going into any great deal detail or using technological terms let's just say that a computer can not understand either language or images. Computers speak their own language and in order for any device such as a printer, a scanner or a camera to speak to the computer they have to speak the computers language. These pieces of machinery are made with the capability to automatically transfer words or images into language the computer understands. These images are digital in nature.

What is a digital image?

Digital images are made up of millions of tiny squares that if we could see them clearly would resemble mosaic tiles. These squares are called pixels. If you were to enlarge a computer picture many times it's normal size you would begin to see these tiny squares. Digital photography for beginners often show enlarged pictures to help the beginner better under stand how these digits blend together to form a picture. You can do this yourself by downloading a picture to your computer then using a software program to enlarge the picture repeatedly until these squares start to appear.

When you use a digital camera, you sight in the object you are taking a picture of and then shoot the picture. The camera then takes the picture's image and converts it to all these little squares. These squares or digits can then be read by the computer and the computer then forms a picture using these little million of tiny squares to create the image. You now have a simple answer to your question of what is digital photography.

A broader definition

However, there is a much broader definition for what is digital photography. And that is that digital photography can use three sources to give you images. The digital camera is the most obvious, but you can also digitally reproduce a frame from a video and can use a scanner to change a conventional photo into a digital image that your computer can understand.

Digital photography also uses software programs to edit and refine these images. There are many great editing software programs that can make digital photography for beginners simpler and easier. Many of these software programs for digital photography for beginners are free and start you out with the basics in editing such as cutting, enlarging, light balance and scene balance. As your editing skills improve there are software programs that allow you to do more and more editing.
