Welcome to my tattoo photo galleries. Tattooing is one of the oldest forms of body art. The desire to express individuality and style through body decoration and adornment is a basic human trait and is something that people have done through-out history.
As an art, tattoos have been traced back 4,000 years to the Egyptians. In modern times the cultural status of tattooing has steadily evolved from that of an anti-social activity in the 1960s to that of a trendy fashion statement. In fact, it's fair to say that tattoos are enjoying a renaissance. Tattoos are now proudly worn by everyone from rock stars and professional athletes, to fashion models, movie stars, businessmen and stay-at-home mums.
Artists trained in traditional fine art disciplines began to embrace tattooing and brought with them entirely new sorts of sophisticated imagery and technique. Advances in electric needle machines and pigments provided them with new ranges of color, delicacy of detail and aesthetic possibilities.
For many people the designs and symbols of body art hold great meaning. Similar designs can be found across cultures but their meaning can differ greatly. Within cultures the meaning of certain designs can change over time.
Successful body art photography starts with a deep appreciation of the art of tattooing. Many tattooists are masters of colored realism and are able to create works that seem to be stepping out of the skin.
Many thanks to tattoo artist, Hector Cedillo, who shared one of his quotes on tattooing with me:
'There are many of us for whom Tattooing is an irreplaceable part of life. We rely on it to take us out of sadness, madness, pressures of poverty, youth, age, etc. Mixed with Art it seems to be a remedy for just about anything, be it a rapid fire of ideas exploding in catharsis all over the skin, or an obsessive marathon of soul-searching.
Tattooing appears somehow more solid and present in our lives than material things, something we can always address and hold on to. At its best, tattooing connects us to a feeling as large as the whole goddamn universe itself.. Practice responsible tattooing..'
~ Hector Cedillo
Photographing tattoo images is a wonderful opportunity to step into an explosion of figures and colors that are bound to surprise you. Black and white body art photography can be particularly striking, as in the following examples:
