Photography as an Art Form

It's worth asking whether photography as an art form is respected in our progressively digital-driven society. It seems that collections of computer-manipulated images are still a rarity in art galleries. As such, photographers aren't encouraged to explore artistic expression that includes the fusion of photography with programs such as Adobe's Photoshop or other post-processing software.

Is Photography Art?

Photo by Satoshi Matsuyama I have read some lively discussion on photography forums exploring the question, 'Is photography art?' The consensus seems to be that yes, photography can be art, but that does not mean all photography is art.

As for the way manipulated photographs are being perceived, it seems that as with all 'periods' in the timeline of art, there needs to be a few brave artists who are willing to break away from what is traditionally acceptable, and bring their style into the mainstream's recognition.

One such an artist is the Japanese photographer, Satoshi Matsuyama, who claims to use up to 300 different images in every one of his creative masterpieces.

Satoshi Matsuyama believes strongly that we need art for our generation and works towards spreading 'live art' through his chain of galleries called Xeromax.

His work is intantly recognizable with a consistent nature theme that runs throughout his merged seascape or landscape photography, blended with additional compositional elements. He also uses a radical adjustment of colour to cement his trademark images.

Says Matsuyama, 'To truly understand the messages from our Creator (God) these works must be viewed with the naked eye. We can make the impossible dream possible with this great digital technology and there is no need to graduate art college or get an education in photographic technique. This means equally gifted people from all the world can use the technology for their peace and happiness.'

Digital Art

So is digital photography art? History shows that the emergence of a new style of medium isn't fully recognized or revered as 'classics' until long after the genre's popularity wanes.

Besides, it's difficult to negate photography as an art form when enjoying the vividly stimulating images of a true artist such as Matsuyama.
