Focus on Female Photography

Beautiful, Fragile and Luxurious

The cream of human figure photography is without a doubt reflecting beauty in female photography. So as a photographer, how do you get the best results?

Female Body Photography

Successful female photography starts with your choice of model. It's easiest to work with a woman who knows herself and her body well, has confidence and is comfortable in her own skin in front of the camera.

The challenge is to capture the 'moment' and bring it into a timeless medium. There are few things more satisfying than creating a beautiful, fragile and luxurious image of a woman who is wearing her own skin.

The most memorable photographs are often the ones that manage to extract and contrast the model's inner power and sensitivity... to show the strength of her inner self despite her vulnerable nude form.

Tips for Successful Female Photography

1. Develop your own trademark style. It could be classy black-and-white photography, or a unique way of experimenting with light and shadow. Allow your interests to shine through the images, for example film, fashion, or pop culture.

2. Know the female body. It is the purest instrument of reflecting beauty. When you reduce a woman to her essentials, you have the opportunity to create a timeless piece of art. You can achieve this by playing with skintones, unique structures of the body's features, and manipulating light and shadow.

3. Make the details count. When your model is stripped down, it's the little things that make an image memorable, for example a stunning piece of jewellery, or the way you highlight her eyes.

4. A good female photography portrait should portray the model's personality, so get to know her and make sure she is as comfortable as possible while you're working. The portrayal of inner beauty should always come first when you photograph a woman, so ask yourself, 'What makes this person uniquely beautiful?' Then work on capturing that beauty in a way that it can be absorbed by the person who will ultimately view your work.

5. A good knowledge of lighting is essential for working with nudes to accentuate curves.

6. Experiment with a variety of props so that the model does not look lost in the frame on her own.

7. Master the digital medium to make the most of your images. You have to know what you are doing with your equipment and you have to have the knowledge about the possibilities that the medium offers you. Since digital photography has hit the mainstream, more pictures are produced and it's a lot harder to stand out. The more passionate you are about excellence, and the better you combine a disciplined approach with a creative eye for originality, the more successful you will be.
