A Family Portrait Poses Tutorial

Family portrait poses have changed a lot over the past years. Previously, family portraits may have been taken in a studio setting with family members standing or sitting in a straight line. Today, families are photographed in their own homes, outdoors and in all kinds of interesting settings.

Family Portrait Ideas for Poses

Family Portrait Ideas 1: Capture the Whole Family

When taking family photographs, ensure that you have different poses of the whole family, including the kids together, mum with the kids, dad with the kids, each parent with each of the kids on their own. Shoot wider views that include the background and close-ups of individuals' faces.

The golden rule for family portrait poses is to take lots of photos so that there is a wide variety to choose from.

Family Portrait Ideas 3: Go for Motion

By moving away from static images and showing motion, you capture a wonderful informal sense of freedom and fun. When doing motion shots, it's a matter of setting it up as best you can, then hoping for a little luck that all the arms and feet are in the right place.

Family Portrait Ideas 4: Change your Point of View

Varying your shooting level can bring a touch of creativity to your images. Shoot directly from above your family, or position yourself flat on the ground in shoot upwards.

Altering your viewpoint is also useful when you have a cluttered background, which can spoil an image.

Although many great photographs are not planned, they just happen, you still have to be able to recognize the potential and have the skills to carry it off. This comes more easily with experience and practice.
