How to Improve your Photography

Here's what you can do to challenge yourself to take better photos and take your photography to a whole new level.

Be a Better Photographer Tips 1: Always Keep your Camera with You

If you want to take better photos, take more photos. A good way to accomplish this is to always take your camera with you where-ever you go. You just never know when the opportunity is going to present itself to take a spectacular photo! In fact, join our 365 project and challenge yourself to shoot one good photo a day.

Be a Better Photographer Tips 2: Read a Photography Book a Month

You never get too old to learn new tricks, so challenge yourself to read one good photography book per month. It's not enough to just read though, you have to apply what you learn. The more you experiment with new techniques, the further you will go in photography and the better your photos will be.

Be a Better Photographer Tips 3: Join a Photography Network or Club

If you want to be successful in photography, you don't have to go it alone. There are wonderful communities both on- and offline that will give you a warm sense of camaraderie. There's no better way to learn than through contribution. Photographic communities encourage you to give and receive advice. You can write newsletters or blogs. Make sure to ask for feedback on your photos and tell others what you like about their efforts. Forum participation is also a good way to make likeminded friends.

Be a Better Photographer Tips 4: Submit your Photos to Competitions

Don't be afraid to compete. A great way to challenge yourself to consistently raise the bar is to participate in photo competitions. Not only will you work a little bit harder to produce better photos, but you'll learn from other photographers' submissions too. And who knows, you may even win a cool prize!

Be a Better Photographer Tips 5: Plan Regular Formal Shoots

If you want to build your portfolio, plan for regular photo shoots once a week, once a fortnight, or even once a month if that is all your schedule allows. It's good practice to go through the motions of planning all the details, finding the models and props, setting up the lighting, and getting the shots in the bag. Make sure to study your images and work out how you can improve your formal shoots every time.

Be a Better Photographer Tips 6: Create Photo Books of your Best Work

Think in themes and create photo books of your best work. A good place to start is blurb.com for a professional finish. If you put a little bit of thought into it, photography books can make wonderful gifts for friends and family too.

Be a Better Photographer Tips 7: Build a Website

I encourage you to build your own website to showcase your work. It's really not that difficult to do! An added benefit is that it gives you a platform to share your best images and it adds to your credibility too!

Be a Better Photographer Tips 8: Display your Work

A good way to challenge yourself to take better photos is to display your work - not only in your own home, but those of friends and family as well. One way to do it is to create calendars of themes that you especially like: cats, sunsets, eyes, landscapes, florals, or anything else that takes your fancy. Give them friends and family to hang on their walls. Not quite that ambitious? Just make personal postcards to send to your loved ones.

You can also explore the possibility of displaying your photographs in local venues too. There are many small businesses, including cafes and coffee shops - that are happy to support local artists. Make an appointment with a select few and take examples of images that may fit the decor.

Be a Better Photographer Tips 9: Take a Workshop

There are no shortage of photography workshops that will hone your skills and open your eyes to new techniques. Decide what will fit your needs best - you may enjoy getting away for a weekend to get some hands-on experience, or you may prefer an online course where you can learn at your own pace.

Be a Better Photographer Tips 10: Explore Ways to Make Money

There is no better incentive to take great photos than the promise of extra money in the bank. Explore the possibilities of stock photography, or look into the myriad other ways that professional photographers earn a buck, including portrait, events- and wedding photography, selling images at fairs, or getting published. Create a business plan and set some goals for yourself. Then practise, practise, practise!
